Sound devices

()

You can of course use Jamulus with your computer’s built-in sound card or microphone.

However, most people use external devices like USB microphones or audio interfaces. These usually perform much better than “stock” hardware in terms of audio quality, latency and time needed to set them up. Most are quite inexpensive and are “plug and play”.

Audio devices known to work with Jamulus

NOTE the device must have a sample rate of 48 kHz (DVD quality) - which many devices do.

Additionally, it should allow you to listen to the computer’s audio signal. See this explanation. This may or may not be significant depending on the instrument you play.

On Windows, it’s recommended to choose a device with a native ASIO driver - not ASIO4ALL (or other generic ASIO drivers).

Key

✅ Works reasonably well with Jamulus and lets you turn monitoring off (if applicable). You might need to set up some things, but sound quality and latency are fine.

😐 - Works, but there might be some difficulties. If you want to buy a new device, don’t buy this one.

❌ - Will not work correctly, or does not allow you to turn monitoring off so will cause problems.

❓ - Not yet rated. If you own this device and test it, feel free add to the results here.

USB/USB-C devices

Windows: ❓ Not yet tested.

macOS: ✅ Works well.

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter, very affordable DAC for wired earphones with microphone.

Windows: 😐 Doesn’t work well. Using ASIO4ALL sometimes leads to distorted sound.

macOS: ✅ Works well with decent wired headphones.

Linux: ✅ Works well with decent wired headphones.

iOS: ✅ Works well with decent wired headphones.

Note: Choosing decent wired headphones is key. The standard, wired Apple EarPods with microphone are enough as entry level audio device but the microphone may have an audible noise floor and not enough dynamic range. It might clip for loud noises.

Microphones / DI Boxes

Blue Yeti, USB Microphone

Windows: ✅ Works well with ASIO4ALL; a bit more latency than under macOS. You can disable local monitoring by going deep into the settings.

macOS: ✅ Works well. (There is a check option to disable local monitoring).

Linux: 😐 Latency is good. You can’t disable local monitoring (or we haven’t found out how to do it, feel free to add this information if you know how to do it).

Marantz MPM-1000U, low-cost USB Microphone

Windows: ✅ Works. Needs ASIO4All. Probably a bit more latency than under macOS.

macOS: ❓ Not yet tested.

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Shure X2u, USB to XLR audio interface with headphone jack connector that converts a wired microphone to a USB microphone.

Windows: ✅ Works. Set the PC/Mix dialog box to 100% PC to listen to Jamulus’ mix on the headphone output.

Linux: ❓ not yet tested.

Audio interfaces / digital mixing consoles

Ammoon AGM02 and Ammoon AGM04, low-cost USB 2-channel and 4-channel compact mixing consoles

Windows: 😐 Works ok. Tested AGM02. On Windows 10, with ASIO4ALL, the AGM02 can be used as an input, and the onboard audio as the output. There is no way to monitor only the USB return signal on the AGM02.

macOS: ✅ Works. Both tested on macOS Catalina.

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Note: The Ammoon AGM04 appears to be a re-branded ART USBMix4.

ART USBMIX4, USB 4-channel compact mixing console (see above), lower retail price than the AGM04 in Canada and includes CD-ROM with ART ASIO driver plus 5 VDC power adapter for standalone use or when computer USB port cannot supply suffciient juice. Audio from USB can be monitored without the direct feed from the microphone.

Windows: ✅ Works well on Windows 10. Latency added via the ART ASIO driver v1.1 = ~14 ms; via ASIO4ALL v2 = ~24 ms

macOS: ❓ Supported; should work.

Linux: ❓ Spec says USB Class Compliant plug-and-play Mac / PC Interface; should work.

Tested on Raspberry Pi 4B with JamBox image: Latency added through JACK = 13 ms; Pi USB port underpowered so use the supplied power adapter.

Note: “Latency added” = Jamulus 3.7.0 client’s reported Overall Delay minus Ping Time to a cloud server pinging at ~4 ms.

The ART USBMIX4 appears to be a re-branded Ammoon AGM04.

Audient EVO 4, USB digital audio interface 2-in/2-out

Windows: ❓ Should work

macOS: ❓ Should work

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Driver installation and download

Behringer UCA222 & Behringer UCA202 U-Control, 2-in/2-out USB Audio Interface with Digital Output

Windows: 😐 Doesn’t work great with ASIO4ALL. Behringer withdrew support for a native driver a while ago, and removed it from their download section.

macOS: ✅ Works better than on Windows.

Linux: ✅ Works better than on Windows.

Note: Ploytec, a German company have developed a very low latency alternative to ASIO4ALL and the native Behringer driver for both Windows and Mac. It is capable of latency in the 2 ms range. Their software driver is somewhat expensive at $60, but you can download and try it out to see if it is worth the money for your situation. The demo download can be found at: on usb-audio.com

Behringer UMC202HD, UMC204HD, and UMC404HD USB digital audio interfaces. Affordable. Behringer provides native ASIO drivers for Windows.

Windows: ✅ Works great. Get the Behringer ASIO driver from Behringer’s website under “Downloads”.

macOS: ✅ Works great (measured interface latency with Oblique Audio RTL Utility, 48000 64 samples and cable from output to input on Mac OS X Big Sur: 10.625 ms. Note this is only the interface latency not the latency in Jamulus)

Linux: ✅ Works great (measured interface latency of UMC202HD with alsa_delay hw:1 hw:1 48000 64 2 and cable from output to microphone input on Debian 10: 8.451 ms. Note this is only the interface latency not the latency in Jamulus)

macOS: ❓ Should work.

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Behringer XR18 (XR serie), USB digital mixing consoles

Windows: ❓ Should work.

macOS: ❓ Should work.

Linux: ✅ Works great, as soon as you manage to route 2 of the 18 inputs and outputs through QJackCtl and the XR18-settings

Behringer XENYX series, USB digital audio interfaces

Windows: 😐 Doesn’t work great. The Behringer ASIO Driver does not appear to be very good. Audio latency with this “unsupported” driver seems poor - not better than ASIO4ALL.

macOS: ✅ Works great.

Linux: ✅ Works great.

Tested Behringer XENYX X1832 USB (USB audio) on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS which works fine. More testing required.

ESI U22 XT, low cost USB 2.0 Audio interface with ASIO-driver supporting basic audio routing natively

Windows: ✅ Works. Tested with native ASIO driver.

macOS: ✅ Works great.

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Roland TD-27 USB drum sound module

Windows: ✅ Works. The local master signal is always routed to the Headphones. Using JACK is neccessary to change the signal-routing so that you hear your signal on the headphones - not the local signal of the drum module: Configuration Changes: On the TD27 open: SYSTEM -> USB-AUDIO: Driver Mode VENDOR SYSTEM -> OUTPUT -> PAD MAS: remove any pad signal from MASTER(L+R); PAD DIR: add desired(all) pad signals to DIRECT(1/2) OTHER MAS: remove any signal and add just USB-IN to MASTER(L/R) In Jamulus set Audio-Device: TD27, Input Channel: Direct(1/2), output Channel: Main(1/2). Now the Jamulus signal will be sent to the master output jack of the TD27. (You probably need a headphone amplifier to connect you headphones to the master output jack)

macOS: ❓ Not yet tested.

Linux: ❓ Not yet tested.

Solid State Logic SSL2+, USB-C/USB digital audio/MIDI interface 2 in/4 out

Windows: ✅ Works great with the native ASIO driver.
